Genesis 1:20: We had just been told that God put two lights in the sky to shine on the earth and to rule over the day and over the night in order to separate day from night. Now we read that “God said, ‘Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.’” The passage opens with “And God said…” This repeated phrase throughout Genesis 1 emphasizes that creation is not a random or evolutionary process, but an intentional act of a sovereign God who brings life into existence by his powerful word. Thus, we see the sovereignty of God as the ultimate Creator, who speaks life into existence and fills the seas and sky with life. The phrase “abound with” highlights the richness and variety of life that God created, particularly within the aquatic realm. This leaves little room for evolution. The Hebrew word translated as “abound” suggests a swarming or multiplying. This also reflects God’s provision for the world and the richness of His creation. In essence, this verse is a powerful statement about the vastness and diversity of life that God brought forth, demonstrating His immense creative power and purposeful design. 

“So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.” (v.21). This emphasizes the mass quantity and productive nature of the life created in the waters. This involves the immense and rich diversity of marine ecosystems. “According to their kinds” is a recurring theme in Genesis 1 that indicates God’s role in creating life in distinct categories or groupings, each capable of reproducing its own kind. This reflects an inherent order and categorization within creation. Again, this deals a death blow to the theory of evolution.

“And God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.’” (v.22). By so doing, God blessed His creation with fertility, which empowered them to reproduce and keep their species alive. This verse reveals a key aspect of God’s character: He designed the world to be filled with life in a structured and purposeful way, with specific environments for different creatures. 

“So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.” (v.23). In principle, the fifth day witnesses the appearance of aquatic life and birds, which was a crucial step in preparing the Earth for the full spectrum of life, leading up to the creation of land animals and humans on the following day.

“Then God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind’; and it was so.” (1:24). This verse stresses that God’s creation was purposeful and structured. “According to its kind” pinpoints that God created various animal groups with the inherent ability to reproduce and diversify within their specific boundaries, while maintaining their fundamental distinctions. This presents a theological statement about God as the ultimate Creator, the source of all things, rather than a scientific explanation of the exact process of creation. This is something that only God had the power and sovereignty to do.

What spiritual implications for believers are found in these verses? They reveal God’s supreme power to effortlessly create and sustain life. It highlights His intentional design of the natural world, His desire for fruitful multiplication, and His active, ongoing provision over everything He has made. The Power of the Spoken Word: God spoke, and life instantly teemed in the waters and on the land, reminding believers of the creative, active power of God’s spoken truth and promises. God explicitly blessed the creatures, commanding them to “be fruitful and increase in number”. For believers, this establishes that fruitfulness (spiritual growth, evangelism, and good works) is a direct result of God’s blessing and design. Just as God equipped the birds and sea creatures to thrive in their habitats, believers are taught to trust in God’s continuous care and provision for their daily needs. By creating a vast array of animals “according to their kinds,” God showcases the beauty and infinite wisdom of His varied creation, encouraging believers to appreciate diversity within the body of believers.
