Midori Koto is a character in the television series, Highlander. The role was played by Japanese-born American actress and singer, Tamlyn Tomita. In Season Three, Episode 1: “The Samurai,” Midori is speaking to a character named Duncan MacLeod about a vow she made and why it was so important for her to keep it. She answered his questions, about maintaining her honor by the choice she made, by saying, “Honor isn’t about making the right choices. It’s about dealing with the consequences.”
Dr. Gloria Edmunds wrote on accepting choices and their consequences. She said: “Accepting responsibility for oneself includes an understanding of how your choices have consequences and recognizing your responsibility for choices. Choices play a key role in shaping or defining your life.
In a moment, an unwise choice can completely derail your best-developed goals and plans or an unwise choice can completely change your life. Acting responsibly involves making wise choices that can lead to positive outcomes, and thus avoiding poor choices that can result in negative consequences. A person needs to take responsibility for choices and to understand what contributes to wise choices, as well as poor choices.”
In the end, our honor and character will be best tested in how we deal with the results of our choices, whether good or bad. So, don’t feel so bad if you see that you did not make the wisest choice. Rather, stand up and take responsibility so you can then address the consequences with honor. People will respect you more for that than your insistence in always being right. – Dr. Robert R Seyda
