SERENDIPITY FOR SATURDAY

th

The Reverend William Archibald Spooner (1844-1930), Warden of New College, Oxford, unconsciously switched the first letters of successive words, causing uproarious laughter in his congregation. After awhile, these verbal slip-ups earned the nickname, “Spoonerisms.” Some examples were instead of saying “tons of soil,” he said, “sons of toil;” rather than “loving shepherd,” he said “shoving leopard;” and in place of “so help me God,” he said “go help me Sod.” One Spoonerism I heard, told of a preacher under what appeared to be a heavy anointing, sweating as he flung his arms, preaching to the top of his voice, encouraging his congregation to fight back against the devil and quoting Ephesians 6:16. However, instead of saying: “…quench all the fiery darts of the wicked,” he yelled, “quench all the diery farts of the wicked.” It is not surprising that instead on continuing, he decided to quickly close in prayer.
